A Realm Worth Protecting

Long before the first Mortal Kombat tournament, the universe itself existed in a delicate balance.

According to official Mortal Kombat lore, the One Being once encompassed all existence.

The Elder Gods eventually defeated this cosmic entity, dividing reality into separate realms to prevent its return.

Among those realms stood Earthrealm.

Unlike many others, Earthrealm became home to countless civilizations, cultures, and generations of ordinary people.

Its strength did not come from immortal rulers.

It came from constant renewal.

The Champion Before Liu Kang

But centuries before his birth, another warrior became the realm’s greatest defender.

The Great Kung Lao.

According to official lore, the Great Kung Lao defeated Shang Tsung, becoming Mortal Kombat champion and preserving Earthrealm’s independence.

His victory inspired generations.

It proved that determination could overcome impossible odds.

Unfortunately, legends do not last forever.

Eventually, the Great Kung Lao faced Prince Goro, the mighty Shokan warrior who served Outworld.

The battle ended in tragedy.

Goro defeated and killed the Great Kung Lao.

That single victory transformed Mortal Kombat history.

Outworld began its infamous streak of tournament victories.

Earthrealm moved closer than ever to complete conquest.

For centuries afterward, every new generation remembered the same lesson.

Heroes could fall.

But hope could not.

Raiden’s Greatest Responsibility

Whenever Earthrealm faced disaster, one figure consistently stood at its side.

Raiden, the God of Thunder.

Officially, Raiden serves as Earthrealm’s divine protector.

Yet many people misunderstand what that role truly means.

Raiden is not allowed to solve every problem himself.

The Elder Gods placed strict limitations upon his actions.

He could guide.

He could advise.

He could inspire.

But he could not simply decide the outcome of Mortal Kombat through divine intervention.

That responsibility always belonged to mortals.

At first glance, this seemed like an enormous weakness.

How could ordinary humans compete against emperors, sorcerers, or fallen gods?

Unlike immortal beings, humans constantly evolve.

Throughout Mortal Kombat’s official timeline, Earth’s greatest defenders rarely begin as legendary heroes.

Liu Kang begins as a disciplined Shaolin monk.

Johnny Cage enters the tournament as a Hollywood martial arts actor determined to prove his abilities are real.

Sonya Blade is a dedicated Special Forces officer pursuing an international criminal.

Jax Briggs is a soldier whose greatest strength is his loyalty to those he serves beside.

None of them are kings.

None inherit divine thrones.

None command ancient empires.

Yet together…

They repeatedly defeat enemies who possess every imaginable advantage.

That recurring pattern reveals something profound about Earthrealm.

Its heroes are not chosen because they are perfect.

They become extraordinary because they continue choosing courage when fear would be easier.
