Few characters in Mortal Kombat embody that struggle better than Kung Lao.

To many fans, he is remembered as the Shaolin monk with the razor-sharp hat, unmatched agility, and unwavering confidence. Others see him simply as Liu Kang’s closest friend or his eternal rival.

But the official lore tells a far deeper story.

Kung Lao was never driven by envy alone.

He was driven by responsibility.

Every victory…

Every defeat…

Every sacrifice…

Was shaped by a legacy that had begun centuries before he was born.

His story is not about becoming stronger than Liu Kang.

The Legacy of the Great Kung Lao

Long before the modern Mortal Kombat tournaments, Earthrealm was protected by one of its greatest champions: The Great Kung Lao.

According to official Mortal Kombat lore, the Great Kung Lao defeated Shang Tsung and became Earthrealm’s champion, preserving peace between the realms for generations.

His triumph, however, did not last forever.

Eventually, he faced Prince Goro, the mighty Shokan warrior.

The duel changed the course of history.

Goro defeated and killed the Great Kung Lao, beginning Outworld’s infamous streak of nine consecutive Mortal Kombat victories. Earthrealm came dangerously close to permanent conquest.

Although centuries passed, the story never disappeared.

Every Shaolin monk knew the legend.

Every student respected his sacrifice.

And one family carried the burden more heavily than anyone else.

The descendants of the Great Kung Lao.

Growing Up at the Wu Shi Academy

Kung Lao was born into that legendary bloodline.

From childhood, he understood that his surname carried extraordinary expectations.

Unlike ordinary children, he trained at the Wu Shi Academy, where discipline shaped every aspect of life.

His greatest mentor was Bo’ Rai Cho, the legendary martial arts master who had left Outworld behind to prepare Earth’s future defenders.

There, Kung Lao met another gifted student.

Liu Kang.

The two young monks quickly became close companions.

They sparred together.

Learned together.

Failed together.

Improved together.

Yet despite their friendship, they developed very different personalities.

Liu Kang was humble, calm, and deeply focused.

Kung Lao was ambitious, confident, and eager to prove himself.

That confidence sometimes appeared arrogant.

But beneath it lay something far more human.

He wanted to prove that the Kung Lao name still deserved to be remembered.

When Liu Kang Was Chosen

As Outworld’s threat grew stronger, Raiden searched for the champion who would represent Earthrealm.

The choice fell upon Liu Kang.

It was a defining moment in Kung Lao’s life.

Official dialogue throughout multiple Mortal Kombat games shows that Kung Lao occasionally questioned whether he had been overlooked.

He accepted Raiden’s decision.

He remained loyal to Earthrealm.

He never abandoned his friends.

Yet he quietly wondered if history would always remember someone else first.

First…

The Great Kung Lao.

Then…

Liu Kang.

It was not hatred.

It was the fear of becoming invisible despite dedicating his entire life to the same cause.

A Warrior Who Never Chose the Easy Path

Official lore consistently portrays Kung Lao as one of Earthrealm’s strongest defenders.

Whenever danger appeared, he rarely hesitated.

He volunteered for dangerous missions.

He confronted powerful enemies.

He fought alongside Liu Kang, Raiden, Sonya Blade, Jax Briggs, and the other champions against Outworld’s relentless invasions.

Unlike many warriors who sought fame, Kung Lao’s greatest victories often came without recognition.

He fought because Earthrealm needed defenders.

And because somewhere deep inside, he believed every battle brought him one step closer to honoring his ancestor’s sacrifice.

His ambition was real.

But so was his loyalty.

That balance made him one of the most compelling Shaolin warriors in Mortal Kombat history.
